HIP-HOP IN OAKLAND
Hip-Hop Culture in Oakland: Social and Political Activism
"People underestimate the hip-hop audience and the capacity to understand politics when it's a part of music." - Oakland hip-hop artist Michael Franti of Spearhead
"Hip-hop activism is dedicated to four systems of domination: socio-political oppression, criminal justice, monolithic education, and cultural imperialism. Hip-hop culture recognizes that these issues are interwoven and dependent on one another to perpetuate domination." -Nocella (2014)
Youth from the Oakland Creative Neighborhoods Coalition included this mural in their petition for increasing funding for the arts. This photo demonstrates the connection between hip-hop culture and political and social reform, as the youth include affordable housing and cultural equity in their demand for increased resources for Oakland art programs.
